Recipe Notes
Leftovers: Store leftover agua fresca in a covered glass bottle, jar, or pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Stir or shake before serving, as natural separation may occur.
No Maple Syrup: Substitute honey or another preferred sweetener. You can also reduce or omit the sweetener if your strawberries are already very ripe.
Make It Sparkling: Top each glass with sparkling water just before serving.
Make It Smoother: Pour the blended mixture through a fine-mesh strainer before serving for a lighter texture.
What Is Agua Fresca?
Agua fresca translates to “fresh water” and generally refers to a refreshing drink made by blending fruit with water. Depending on the recipe, citrus, herbs, seeds, or a small amount of sweetener may also be added.
Unlike a smoothie, agua fresca is typically lighter and more fluid. The fruit provides flavour without creating the thick texture associated with a smoothie or shake.
This strawberry basil agua fresca keeps the formula simple with fresh fruit, water, lime, basil, and just enough maple syrup to balance the flavours.
Fruit- and herb-based drinks can also be an easy way to make water more appealing. Canada’s Food Guide recommends water as the beverage of choice and even suggests flavour combinations such as strawberries with fresh basil.
Why Strawberry and Basil Work Together
Strawberries have a naturally sweet, slightly tart flavour that pairs well with fresh herbs. Basil adds an aromatic note that makes the drink feel a little more interesting without taking over.
Lime helps connect the two flavours by adding acidity and freshness. The result is a drink that tastes fruity first, with a light herbal finish.
If you are unsure about basil in a drink, start with slightly less and add more after blending. Fresh herbs can become much more noticeable once they are broken down in the blender.
Should You Strain Strawberry Basil Agua Fresca?
Straining is completely optional.
Leaving the drink unstrained keeps more of the strawberry pulp and creates a slightly fuller texture. If you prefer your agua fresca lighter and smoother, pour it through a fine-mesh strainer before adding the ice.
Neither version is better. It comes down to the texture you enjoy most.
How to Make Sparkling Agua Fresca
If you prefer a little fizz, turn this recipe into a sparkling agua fresca. Prepare the strawberry mixture with slightly less still water, then pour it over ice and top each glass with sparkling water just before serving. Adding the sparkling water at the end helps preserve the carbonation instead of blending the bubbles away.
Can You Make It Without Added Sweetener?
Absolutely. The amount of sweetener you need will depend largely on the strawberries. Very ripe strawberries may already provide enough sweetness, especially when paired with lime. Taste the drink after blending and decide whether it actually needs anything else. If you do want additional sweetness, maple syrup blends easily into the drink. Honey can also work if that is what you have available.
Personal Experience: The Best Part of Agua Fresca Is How Flexible It Is
One thing I found quite early on about agua fresca is that the basic recipe is incredibly easy to customize. Once you have fruit, water, citrus, and a little sweetness, it is easy to adjust everything based on what tastes good to you.
I tend to prefer aguas frescas that stay bright and refreshing rather than becoming overly sweet, so adding extra lime is usually my first adjustment before reaching for more sweetener. Herbs are another easy way to change the entire drink. Basil gives this version a slightly more aromatic flavour, while mint creates something lighter and more familiar.
That flexibility makes agua fresca especially easy to customize depending on the fruit, herbs, and flavours you already have at home.
Tips for the Best Strawberry Basil Agua Fresca
– Use ripe strawberries whenever possible. Sweeter, more flavourful fruit means you may need less maple syrup.
– Taste before serving. Strawberries can vary quite a bit in sweetness, so the recipe may need slightly more lime or sweetener depending on the batch.
– Add basil gradually if you prefer a subtle herbal flavour. You can always blend in another leaf or two, but it is harder to remove basil once the flavour becomes too strong.
– Serve the drink cold. Agua fresca is most refreshing over ice or after chilling briefly in the refrigerator.
How to Store Strawberry Basil Agua Fresca
Strawberry basil agua fresca is best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be refrigerated in a sealed bottle, jar, or pitcher for up to 3 days. The ingredients may naturally separate while the drink sits. Give it a good shake or stir before pouring another glass.

If you are preparing a sparkling version, store the strawberry mixture on its own and add sparkling water only when you are ready to serve. That keeps the drink fizzy instead of flat.
A Fresh 5-Minute Drink to Keep in Your Recipe Rotation
Strawberry basil agua fresca proves that a refreshing drink does not need a complicated ingredient list. Fresh strawberries, lime, basil, water, and a touch of sweetness are enough to create something bright and flavourful in just a few minutes.
Keep it smooth or pulpy, make it still or sparkling, adjust the sweetness, or swap in different herbs depending on what you have available.
Once you know the basic formula, strawberry basil agua fresca is just one of many easy combinations you can make.
